Bighorn National Forest
National Forest · Sheridan, Wyoming
A forest covering the Bighorn Mountains, an isolated range rising abruptly from the plains between Sheridan and the Bighorn Basin, crossed by three scenic highways. Its centre is the Cloud Peak Wilderness, glacier-carved high country with hundreds of lakes below 13,167-foot Cloud Peak. Along the roads are Shell Canyon and Shell Falls, the Medicine Wheel, and Ten Sleep Canyon, whose limestone walls are known to sport climbers across the country, plus old guest lodges and many campgrounds. It is noticeably quieter than the mountains around Yellowstone, and has no grizzly bears. The forest covers about 1.1 million acres of the Bighorn Mountains.
