Biloxi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast

Casino Strip · Biloxi, Mississippi

Twenty-six miles of man-made beach along Highway 90 between Biloxi, Gulfport and Pass Christian, with a casino industry that arrived in 1992, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and rebuilt itself onshore. The coast is a genuinely odd hybrid — a working seafood town, a resort strip, a Frank Gehry art museum and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse of its kind on the Gulf, standing in the central reservation of a dual carriageway. Katrina is the fact underneath all of it: the storm surge went twenty-eight feet and the coast that exists now was substantially built after 2005.
