A zoo south of Battle Creek built through woodland rather than around a central path, whose signature is Wild Africa — a savanna enclosure reached by a tram ride through the trees, where visitors feed giraffes by hand from a raised deck. The approach through the woods is deliberate and it makes the savanna arrive as a surprise.
