Birds Hill Provincial Park

A Provincial Park On A Ridge Of Glacial Gravel Rising Out Of The Prairie, With A Swimming Lake, Camping, A Bison Paddock, Trails, And The Site Of The Winnipeg Folk Festival Each July. A Close Day Trip For Winnipeg, With Sand, Forest And Prairie Grassland Within A Short Walk · Birds Hill, Manitoba

Birds Hill Provincial Park is a popular park about 25 km north of Winnipeg, built on an esker, a long ridge of gravel and sand left by a glacial river at the end of the last ice age. The ridge rises out of the flat prairie and carries a mix of oak woodland, aspen, tallgrass prairie and wetland, which gives the park a surprising variety for a day trip. A man-made lake has a sandy swimming beach, a bison paddock lets visitors see plains bison from a viewing area, and a network of cycling and walking trails winds through the woods. Camping is popular, with reservations needed in summer. Each July the park hosts the Winnipeg Folk Festival, one of the best known in Canada, whose tickets often sell out. A vehicle park pass is needed for entry (confirm the price). Weekends in July and August are crowded, mosquitoes are common in the woods, and the swim area may post water-quality notices after hot spells.

The park is open all year for day use, with the main season from about mid May to early October. Beach services, the bison viewing area, the campground and the park office keep seasonal hours, and some facilities close or reduce service in winter, so confirm dates before you go. A vehicle park pass is needed to enter, with gates and staffing varying by season. Walking the trails is free once the pass is bought, and cross-country skiing and winter walking are popular when snow lies. During the Winnipeg Folk Festival in July, parts of the park are closed to the public, so check dates before planning a visit.
