Birka

UNESCO World Heritage Site (1993) With Hovgarden: The Viking Age Trading Town On Bjorko, One Of Sweden'S Oldest Towns, With A Museum, A Reconstructed Viking Village And Thousands Of Graves · Bjorko, Stockholm County

Birka is the site of a Viking Age trading town on the island of Bjorko in Lake Malaren, about 30 km west of Stockholm, and together with the royal estate of Hovgarden on neighbouring Adelso it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The town is thought to have flourished from roughly the mid 700s to the late 900s AD, trading furs, iron and slaves for silver, glass and silk that came from as far as the Caliphate and Byzantium. Little stands above ground now: you walk over the black earth where the town lay, past a hillfort, grave fields with thousands of mounds, and the Ansgar cross, raised in the 1800s to mark the Frankish monk Ansgar's mission here in the 9th century. A museum with models and finds and a reconstructed Viking village bring it to life, and guided tours explain what the grass hides. The honest caveat: access is almost only by summer boat, roughly May to September, it takes a full day from Stockholm, and visitors hoping for ruins or longships find mostly meadows and mounds.

Bjorko island in Lake Malaren, Ekero Municipality, reached by summer boat from Stockholm or Adelso, Bjorko, Stockholm County, Sweden

Seasonal: Birka is open roughly from May to September, with daily boats in summer (roughly late June to mid August) and fewer departures, often weekends only, in May and September - confirm the current timetable. Out of season there is effectively no access; the museum, village and restaurant are closed and no scheduled boats run. The main route is the day-trip boat from Stadshusbron beside Stockholm City Hall, about 2 hours each way, run by a large long-established sightseeing operator; the ticket usually includes the guided tour and museum entry - hedge the details. Buy ahead on the operator's website in July, when boats sell out. There are also shorter summer boats from Hovgarden on Adelso, which is reached by road from Ekero and a short car ferry. The boat gives you a fixed few hours on the island; miss the return and there is no other way off.
