Birthplace of Country Music Museum

Specialty Museum · Bristol, Virginia

A Smithsonian-affiliated museum in Bristol built around a fortnight in the summer of 1927, when a Victor Talking Machine Company producer set up a temporary studio on State Street and recorded seventy-six songs by nineteen acts — among them the first records the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers ever made. Congress named Bristol the Birthplace of Country Music in 1998, and the museum has a working radio station broadcasting from inside it.
