Bisbee

Old Bisbee — National Register Historic District · Bisbee, Arizona

A copper-mining town founded in 1880 in the narrow canyons of the Mule Mountains near the Mexican border, where Victorian buildings and houses climb the hillsides linked by long stairways. The Copper Queen and other mines made it one of the richest mining districts in the world until they closed in the 1970s; the huge Lavender Pit open-pit mine still yawns at the edge of town. Former miners once guided visitors underground on the Queen Mine Tour, which still takes people into the mountain by mine train. The Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, and the town is now known for artists, cafés, the 1902 Copper Queen Hotel and the annual stair climb.
