Bitlis Castle
A Castle On A Cliff Above A Narrow Valley Of Stone Houses, With The Ulu Cami And Old Caravanserais Below, In A City Known For Its Stone Architecture And Tobacco. A Scenic Stop On The Road From Van To Diyarbakir, With A Strong Mountain Feel · Bitlis, Bitlis
Bitlis Castle is a fortress on a steep rock above the old stone city of Bitlis, which fills a narrow valley in the mountains of eastern Turkiye not far from Lake Van. The walls are of dark local stone and are often linked to medieval and earlier builders, though the exact layers are uncertain (confirm). Below the rock, stone houses with carved doorways climb the slopes on both sides of a small river, and the Ulu Cami, old caravanserais and Seljuk-era medrese stand among narrow lanes, which gives the town an architecture unlike most of Turkiye. The castle gives views along the valley and over roofs of grey and honey-brown stone. Bitlis is also known for its tobacco, its honey from mountain pastures and a cool climate with long snowy winters. Most visitors pass through on the road between Van, Tatvan and Diyarbakir, and a stop of two to three hours is enough. Check current travel advice for the region before you plan.
