Black Hills National Forest

National Forest · Custer, South Dakota

More than a million and a quarter acres of ponderosa pine covering the Black Hills across South Dakota and into Wyoming, and the reason everything else in this region exists. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave and Black Elk Peak all sit inside or against it. It was proclaimed in 1897, making it one of the earliest forest reserves in the country, and the Lakota call these hills Ȟe Sápa - the heart of everything that is.
