Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park

National Historical Park · Uxbridge, Massachusetts

A dispersed national park along the river that runs from Worcester down into Rhode Island, commemorating where the American Industrial Revolution actually began — Samuel Slater built the first successful water-powered cotton mill in the United States on this river in 1793, having memorised the machinery in England and left without permission. The Massachusetts side is farm, canal, mill village and towpath rather than a single visitor centre, and it is a park you drive and walk rather than tour.

287 Oak Street, Uxbridge, Massachusetts, 01569, United States

FREE throughout, with free parking at all sites. It is a DISPERSED park with no single main building — start at River Bend Farm Visitor Center in Uxbridge, whose hours are LIMITED AND SEASONAL and which is closed some days; check before travelling. Ranger walks and programmes run seasonally and are free. The park is shared with Rhode Island and Slater Mill is over the state line in Pawtucket.
