Blackstone Territorial Park

A Boreal Forest Park Beside The Liard Highway With A Campground, A River Valley, A Visitor Centre And A Start Point For Visits To The Nahanni Country. A Stop On The Liard Highway, With Services Limited To The Summer Season · Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories

Blackstone Territorial Park lies where the Liard Highway crosses the Blackstone River in the Dehcho region of the Northwest Territories, roughly 90 km from Fort Simpson (confirm distance). The park protects a stretch of boreal river valley with spruce, aspen and a sandy bank, and a campground, picnic area and short trails give travellers a place to stop between the Mackenzie River and the Liard River country. In the past it has served as a base for visits to the Nahanni region, and a small visitor centre has stood here in some seasons to explain the park and the wider landscape (confirm whether it is staffed). Mountains show faintly on the western horizon on clear days, and the river runs clear and quick over gravel. Wildlife is common, with black bears, moose and wood bison all using the corridor. The place is quiet, remote and simple, a good night under the spruce rather than a grand sight.

The park is a summer facility, with the campground and day-use area usually open from about mid May to mid September (confirm dates), and any visitor centre following its own short season and weekly hours (confirm). The Liard Highway is open all year in principle, but services along it are few, and spring thaw or summer rain can soften the gravel stretches. Light lasts nearly through the night in June, then fades fast in September, when frost can touch the camp. Winter visits are not recommended without a prepared vehicle and a satellite messenger.
