Blenheim Palace
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Blenheim Palace (1987). The Huge Baroque Country House Given To The Duke Of Marlborough After The Battle Of Blenheim, Designed By Vanbrugh With Parkland By Capability Brown, And The Birthplace Of Winston Churchill In 1874. State Rooms, A Formal Water Terrace Garden, A Maze And An 800 Hectare Park · Woodstock, England
Blenheim Palace is a vast baroque country house at Woodstock, about 13 km north-west of Oxford, built from 1705 as a gift to the Duke of Marlborough after his victory at the Battle of Blenheim. Sir John Vanbrugh designed it as a national monument as much as a home, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, the state rooms hold tapestries, painted ceilings and a grand library, and the Churchill Exhibition marks the room where Winston Churchill was born in 1874. He is buried in the churchyard at Bladon, just outside the park. Outside, Capability Brown shaped the lake and parkland, and there are formal water terraces, a maze and a miniature train. The palace is impressive but tickets are costly, and a cheaper park-only ticket gives you the grounds without the rooms. Plan most of a day, expect crowds on summer weekends and school holidays, and know that the palace is still a family home, so some rooms close for private events. Christmas brings a lit-up trail and an extra charge.

The palace and park are open most days of the year, with longer hours in summer and shorter ones in winter. The state rooms usually open a little later than the park gates and stop admitting visitors well before closing, so arrive in the morning. Some days are closed for private events, and the palace is commonly closed on Christmas Day and for part of January; confirm dates before you travel. The formal gardens, maze and miniature train run on a seasonal calendar and may be CLOSED in winter. The park is NOT free: a park-only ticket is still needed, though local annual pass holders get in without paying. The village of Woodstock and the footpaths outside the gate are FREE. Confirm all times close to your date.
