Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park

Historic Site · Parkersburg, West Virginia

An island in the Ohio River below Parkersburg, reached only by sternwheeler, where the Irish aristocrat Harman Blennerhassett built a Palladian mansion in 1800 and then lost everything to Aaron Burr. Burr used the island to stage his 1806 conspiracy, the Virginia militia raided it, the Blennerhassetts fled and the house burned in 1811. The mansion standing there now is a 1984 reconstruction on the original foundations.

Open roughly May through October only, by sternwheeler from Point Park, Parkersburg, on a published timetable that varies by month. NO WINTER ACCESS — the island is closed and unreachable outside the season. Mansion tours, wagon rides and bicycle hire are charged separately.
