Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum

Arboretum · Bristol, Rhode Island

A thirty-two acre summer estate on Bristol Harbour, with an English-style manor house of 1906 by Walter Kilham built after fire destroyed the original, and grounds holding over three hundred species of woody plants. It has been open as a public museum since 1978. Its two draws are a giant sequoia planted around 1930 — described as what is claimed to be the largest on the East Coast — and a spring display of roughly a hundred and fifty thousand daffodils across every one of the thirteen daffodil divisions.

⚠ SEASONAL AND CLOSED ON MONDAYS. The property is open spring through the holiday season and closed for much of the winter; grounds hours run roughly Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00. Confirm the current season and hours on blithewold.org before travelling — both the Monday closure and the winter closure catch visitors out. ⚠ DAFFODIL DAYS RUN FROM LATE MARCH TO EARLY MAY, with about 150,000 blooms across all thirteen daffodil divisions and over a hundred varieties, and they are INCLUDED IN GENERAL ADMISSION rather than separately ticketed. Peak bloom is typically mid-April and moves with the weather, so check the estate's bloom updates the week you travel. Admission is modest and considerably below Newport mansion prices, bought online or at the Welcome Center. Free parking on site. The visit is essentially outdoors with very little wet-weather shelter.
