Blue Mountains National Park

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Greater Blue Mountains Area (2000). A Eucalypt Plateau Of Cliff Lines, Gorges And Waterfalls Two Hours West Of Sydney, With The Three Sisters Rock Formation At Echo Point As Its Best Known View · Katoomba, New South Wales

The Blue Mountains are not mountains in the alpine sense - this is a sandstone plateau sliced into deep gorges by rivers draining the Great Dividing Range, and from Sydney's basin the whole escarpment reads as one long cliff line rather than a row of peaks. The haze that gives the range its name is eucalyptus oil scattering sunlight, visible from Echo Point on any clear afternoon looking past the Three Sisters into the Jamison Valley below. UNESCO listed the Greater Blue Mountains Area in 2000, largely for the sheer diversity of eucalypt species packed into one catchment rather than for any single view. Katoomba is the base town, two hours west of Sydney by car or a slow but direct train many prefer for the final descent through the cuttings. Walking ranges from the paved boardwalk at Echo Point to multi-day routes toward Jenolan, and the Scenic World cableway, railway and skyway lower day-trippers into the valley floor without the climb back up. Bushfire has reached this forest more than once this century, and some tracks stay closed for months while burnt cliff edges are made safe.

The park itself has no gate and no closing time, and the Three Sisters lookout at Echo Point is free and open around the clock, though it is lit and genuinely worth seeing after dark. The Blue Mountains visitor centres at Echo Point and Glenbrook keep normal daytime hours and close over the main holidays. Scenic World's cableway, railway and skyway run daily but charge separately from the park, with the last rides leaving mid-afternoon. Many bushwalking tracks close without notice on days of extreme fire danger or after a burn, sometimes for months while cliff edges are stabilised; check the current closures list before setting out. Trains from Sydney's Central Station run roughly hourly to Katoomba and take around two hours.
