Bodie Island Lighthouse

Lighthouse · Nags Head, North Carolina

The third lighthouse to stand in this spot on the northern Outer Banks, built in 1872 and standing a hundred and fifty-six feet, with black and white horizontal bands that distinguish it from Hatteras's spiral to the south. It was restored between 2009 and 2013 and opened to climbing for the first time - two hundred and nineteen steps to the top. Behind it a boardwalk runs out over the marsh toward Roanoke Sound, and the birding there is as good a reason to come as the tower.

8210 Bodie Island Lighthouse Road, Nags Head, North Carolina, 27959, United States

THE GROUNDS AND BOARDWALK ARE FREE and open daily, dawn to dusk, year round. ⚠ CLIMBING THE TOWER IS SEASONAL AND TICKETED - generally late spring to early autumn only, on timed tickets that sell out, and it does not run in winter. The visitor centre in the keepers' quarters is seasonal. Closed Christmas Day. It is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore and administered by the NPS Outer Banks Group.
