Bogor Botanical Gardens

Founded In 1817 And Among The Oldest Tropical Botanical Gardens In The World; Rubber, Oil Palm And Cinchona Were Trialled Here Before Being Rolled Out Across The Indies · Bogor, West Java

The garden was founded in 1817 and is among the OLDEST TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDENS IN THE WORLD, eighty-odd hectares in the middle of Bogor. IT IS ALSO, AND NOBODY PRESENTS IT THIS WAY, ONE OF THE MOST ECONOMICALLY CONSEQUENTIAL PIECES OF BOTANY EVER DONE IN ASIA. RUBBER, OIL PALM AND CINCHONA - the last of which produced quinine - WERE TRIALLED AND PROPAGATED HERE before being rolled out across the Indies, and the plantation economy that followed reshaped the region and is still reshaping it. You walk through it as a park. OLIVIA RAFFLES IS BURIED IN THE GROUNDS, Stamford Raffles' first wife, who died in Bogor in 1814. THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE ADJOINS IT with SPOTTED DEER on the lawn, and the TITAN ARUM AND RAFFLESIA bloom unpredictably and draw crowds when they do. The oldest planted trees are among the great tropical collections anywhere, a river runs through the grounds, and Jakarta arrives in force every weekend to walk under them.

OPEN DAILY THROUGH THE DAY with an entry fee and DUAL PRICING; there is a separate charge for bringing a car inside, and walking is better. THE ORCHID HOUSE, THE MEXICAN GARDEN AND THE ZOOLOGY MUSEUM within the grounds are ticketed separately or included depending on the current arrangement - ask at the gate. THE ISTANA BOGOR, the presidential palace, is NOT GENERALLY OPEN to casual visitors and requires prior arrangement; ITS DEER ARE VISIBLE FROM THE GARDEN across the lawn, which is what most people actually want. BOGOR IS CALLED KOTA HUJAN, THE RAIN CITY, and thunderstorms in the afternoon are close to a daily fact - go in the morning. IT IS ABOUT AN HOUR FROM JAKARTA ON THE COMMUTER TRAIN, which beats the toll road comfortably at weekends.
