Bokrijk Open-Air Museum

Flanders'S Large Open Air Museum Of Rebuilt Farms, Villages And A Small Town From Across The Region, Set In A Park Estate With Gardens And A Woodland Playground · Genk, Limburg Province

Bokrijk is the big open-air museum of Flanders, set in a wooded estate between Genk and Hasselt in Limburg. Opened in 1958 - the year of the Brussels World Fair - it gathers more than 100 historic buildings rescued from across Flanders and rebuilt here brick by brick and beam by beam: thatched farms and barns from the sandy Kempen, timber-framed farmsteads from the fruit-growing Haspengouw, windmills, chapels, an inn and a small old town. Costumed staff bake bread, work the fields, keep old breeds of animals and show crafts, so the place feels lived in rather than behind glass. Around the museum lies the domain park, free to enter, with gardens, an arboretum, ponds and one of the largest playgrounds in Belgium, which makes Bokrijk a family favourite. Nearby are the C-mine heritage site in Genk, the Hoge Kempen National Park and the cycling paths through the trees and through the water. The honest caveat: the museum itself opens only in the warmer months, roughly April to October, it covers a large area on foot, and wet days can turn the paths muddy.

The open-air museum is seasonal: it usually opens daily from roughly early April to late September or October, from late morning to early evening, and is closed through the winter apart from special events - check the current schedule, as the season dates move a little each year. The domain park, the playground, the arboretum and the walking paths are open all year and are free, with paid parking. In winter, seasonal events such as lights or skating have been held in some years - confirm. Getting there: Bokrijk has its own small railway station on the Hasselt-Genk line, a short walk from the museum entrance, with trains from Hasselt taking about 10 minutes - confirm times, as service is limited; De Lijn buses also run between Hasselt and Genk. By car it is signposted from the E313 and E314 motorways, with large car parks. Buy museum tickets online for summer weekends and school holiday days.
