Boldt Castle
Castle · Alexandria Bay, New York
A six-storey Rhineland castle on Heart Island in the St Lawrence, begun in 1900 by George Boldt — the proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria — as a gift for his wife Louise. In January 1904, with the shell almost complete, she died suddenly and he telegraphed the workmen to stop. Nothing was touched for seventy-four years. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority took it on in 1977 and has been finishing it ever since.
