Bolzano and Otzi the Iceman
South Tyrol Museum Of Archaeology, The Provincial Museum Holding Otzi The Iceman, A Naturally Mummified Body Of About 5,300 Years Old Found On The Tisenjoch In 1991 · Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige
In September 1991 two hikers on a glacier at over three thousand metres found a body in the melt. It turned out to be about five thousand three hundred years old, and because it had been frozen rather than buried it came with everything: the clothes, a copper axe, a longbow, a quiver of arrows, birch-bark containers, a cloak of woven grass, even the contents of his stomach. Ten years later a radiograph found a flint arrowhead lodged in his left shoulder, and Europe's oldest complete human body became its oldest murder victim. He is kept in Bolzano in a refrigerated cell at glacier temperature and shown through a small window, with his kit in the cases around him, and the museum is really one story told properly rather than a collection. Bolzano earns the extra day on its own: a German-speaking Italian city of arcaded streets, produce markets and cable cars, with the Dolomites starting at the edge of town.
