Bonito
Brazil'S Best Known Ecotourism Town, With Crystal Clear Spring Fed Rivers And Caves In The Serra Da Bodoquena · Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul
Bonito is a small town in the south-west of Brazil whose rivers are among the clearest anywhere: water filtered through limestone rises from springs so transparent that snorkellers drifting down them look as if they are floating in air above the fish. It has become the country's model for ecotourism. The classic trips are the float-snorkels down the Rio da Prata and the Rio Sucuri, drifting with dourados and piraputangas through underwater meadows, and the Gruta do Lago Azul, a cave whose deep lake glows blue when the sun reaches it. There are waterfalls, a sinkhole full of nesting red macaws at the Buraco das Araras, and diving at the Abismo Anhumas, where you abseil into a cave lake. What makes Bonito work is its system: every attraction is on private land, visitor numbers per site are capped, and all trips are booked through licensed local agencies with a guide. That means planning ahead and paying well, and it is why the water stays clear. Heavy rain clouds the rivers for days, so leave slack.

Open year-round, but nothing here is walk-in. Every attraction sits on private land with a daily visitor limit, and every visit is booked in advance through a licensed Bonito agency, which issues a voucher for a set day and departure slot; you cannot simply turn up at the gate and pay. In school holidays, Carnival, Easter and the July break the most famous floats and the Abismo Anhumas sell out days or weeks ahead. Most trips run in the morning, with a few afternoon slots, and transport to sites far out of town is often not included - confirm when booking. Heavy rain can cloud the rivers and cancel or spoil snorkelling for a day or more, so keep a free day and ask how refunds and rebooking work. The Gruta do Lago Azul's blue glow depends on the sun's angle and the season. The Balneário Municipal is the one easy, open-access swimming spot.
