Boordy Vineyards

Winery · Hydes, Maryland

Maryland's oldest winery, founded in 1945 in the Long Green Valley north-east of Baltimore by Philip Wagner, an editor at the Baltimore Sun who did something more consequential than make wine. He imported and championed French-American hybrid grapes at a time when everyone insisted decent wine could not be grown in the eastern United States, and his nursery supplied growers from Virginia to New York. A great deal of what the East Coast drinks descends from a newspaperman's back garden in Baltimore County.
