Four Kilometres Of Powder White Sand That The President Called A Cesspool In 2018 Before Closing The Island To Tourists For Six Months · Malay, Aklan
WHITE BEACH IS FOUR KILOMETRES OF SAND SO FINE IT SQUEAKS AND SO PALE IT HURTS IN SUNLIGHT, and for decades it has appeared near the top of every list of the world's best beaches. IN APRIL 2018 THE PRESIDENT DESCRIBED THE ISLAND AS A CESSPOOL AND CLOSED IT TO TOURISTS FOR SIX MONTHS. That is the most important thing about Boracay and most write-ups skip it. Sewage had been going into the sea, buildings stood on the beach easement, and the island was carrying far more people than its infrastructure. THE REHABILITATION DEMOLISHED ILLEGAL STRUCTURES, REBUILT DRAINAGE AND CLEARED A BEACH SETBACK, AND THE ISLAND REOPENED WITH RULES: no drinking or smoking on the sand, no fire dancing, no beach parties, water sports confined to zones, and a cap on arrivals. IT IS A BETTER PLACE FOR ALL OF IT, and the sand is still extraordinary. You cannot simply turn up: accredited accommodation is checked at the jetty and capped.

BORACAY IS REACHED BY AIR INTO CATICLAN (about ten minutes to the jetty) or KALIBO (about ninety minutes by road), then a SHORT FERRY TO CAGBAN JETTY. ARRIVALS ARE CONTROLLED: you must have CONFIRMED ACCOMMODATION AT AN ACCREDITED PROPERTY and this is checked at the jetty - TURNING UP WITHOUT A BOOKING IS NOT POSSIBLE. AN ENVIRONMENTAL FEE AND TERMINAL FEES are collected on the way in. THE POST-2018 RULES ARE ENFORCED: NO DRINKING OR SMOKING ON THE BEACH, NO FIRE DANCING, NO BEACH PARTIES, no sandcastles for hire, and a cleared setback where buildings once stood. WATER SPORTS ARE ZONED - kitesurfing is on BULABOG on the other side. THE HABAGAT, roughly June to October, brings rough water to White Beach and the action moves round.
