Borobudur Temple Compounds
UNESCO World Heritage Site Inscribed 1991; The Largest Buddhist Monument In The World, Built By The Sailendra Dynasty In The Ninth Century And Abandoned For Roughly Five Hundred Years · Magelang, Central Java
Borobudur is THE LARGEST BUDDHIST MONUMENT IN THE WORLD - a stepped stone pyramid built in the ninth century by the Sailendra dynasty, using roughly two million blocks and no mortar, on a hill between two volcanoes in central Java. It is not a temple you go inside. It is a diagram you walk: five square terraces carrying TWO THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-TWO RELIEF PANELS in a continuous narrative, then three circular terraces holding SEVENTY-TWO PERFORATED STUPAS each with a Buddha inside, and a great sealed stupa at the summit. Walking it clockwise from the bottom takes you from the world of desire to the formless. IT WAS ABANDONED AROUND THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY as Java turned to Islam, sat under volcanic ash and jungle for perhaps five hundred years, and was brought back to attention in 1814 under Raffles. It remains an active pilgrimage site at Vesak, when monks process to it from Mendut by candlelight and the monument stops, for one night, being an archaeological object.

OPEN DAILY, and the ticketing is the thing to understand before you go. THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT TICKETS: one for the GROUNDS AND THE LOWER AREA, and a separate, far more limited one to CLIMB ONTO THE TEMPLE STRUCTURE ITSELF. Since the 2023 conservation rules the upper terraces are capped at a small number of visitors a day, require a GUIDED SLOT and the provision of SPECIAL SANDALS (upanat) to protect the stone, and must be BOOKED IN ADVANCE - they sell out. DO NOT ASSUME A TICKET LETS YOU CLIMB. INDONESIA OPERATES DUAL PRICING and the foreigner rate is several times the domestic one; this is normal and not a scam. Sunrise access from within the compound is a separate premium product. VESAK, the full moon of May, brings a major pilgrimage and large crowds. Confirm all current arrangements before travelling - they have changed repeatedly.
