The Best Tide Pools On The British Columbia Coast, A Flat Rocky Shelf With Starfish, Anemones, Urchins And Sea Stars Exposed At Low Tide, With The Start Of The Juan De Fuca Marine Trail. A Winter Low Tide And Summer Exploration Site, So Tide Tables Decide The Visit · Port Renfrew, British Columbia

Botanical Beach is a flat shelf of rock at the end of the road in Port Renfrew on the south-west coast of Vancouver Island, about 100 km west of Victoria, and it holds the richest tide pools on the British Columbia coast. At low tide the sandstone platform shows pools packed with sea stars, anemones, urchins, chitons, limpets and mussels, and early marine researchers worked here more than a century ago. The beach is inside Botanical Beach Provincial Park, reached by an easy walk of roughly 1 km through coastal forest from the car park, and it marks the western end of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. Everything depends on the tide: a very low tide gives a wide pool world to explore, while a high tide covers the shelf and sends waves against the cliffs. Visit with a tide table, and treat the pools as a living aquarium that is easily damaged by careless feet. Winter storms are dramatic, and summer fog is common.

The park and beach are open at any hour in daylight, with no gate, and the best viewing is set by the tide, not the clock. The tide pools are at their best for roughly an hour or two either side of a very low tide, around a height of 1 m or lower - confirm with a current tide table. Low tides in daylight are best from about late spring through summer, while winter lows often come at night. Washrooms and the car park are available all year, and the village of Port Renfrew has limited services that shorten off-season. Storms can close sections of trail, so check conditions before you set out.
