Bothe-Napa Valley State Park

State Park · Calistoga, California

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park lies on Highway 29 between St. Helena and Calistoga, in the middle of California's best-known wine country. It is a redwood-and-oak forest park in wine country: cool, shaded canyons of tall trees and ferns sit a few minutes from vineyards that bake in summer. The park has a campground and, in warm months, a swimming pool - confirm dates and fees - plus walking trails through the woods, including a redwood path and a history path - confirm the names and lengths. Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park is next door. Summer valley heat can be intense, so the forest shade is the reason to come, and ticks and poison oak are normal in the undergrowth. It suits campers who want a budget base for a wine trip, families wanting a pool and a short hike, and anyone who needs a break from tasting rooms. It is small, easy to reach and quiet outside summer weekends, and it is not a destination for a long wilderness trek or for a day of serious hiking.

California State Parks has generally run Bothe-Napa as a day-use park from morning until around sunset, with the campground on its own check-in and check-out times and the swimming pool open only in the warm season, often on a limited weekly schedule - confirm the current hours, the pool dates and whether a staffed kiosk or a pay machine collects the day-use fee. Late summer fire danger can bring restrictions or closures in the hills, and winter rain can make creek-side paths muddy. Smoke from regional wildfires has at times closed or limited outdoor activity across the valley. Check the State Parks page on the day you go.
