Boulder City Historic District

National Register Historic District The Federal Government Town Built From 1931 To House Hoover Dam Workers; Gambling Is Banned By City Charter · Boulder City, Nevada

Boulder City is the small town the federal government built in the desert from 1931 to house the workers who poured Hoover Dam, and its historic core along Nevada Way and Arizona Street is listed as a National Register historic district. Unlike the tent camps and boom towns of the time, it was planned: the design is usually credited to Saco DeBoer, with government offices on a hill, a park below them and a fan of streets toward the business district. Reclamation ran the town tightly - no gambling, and for decades no liquor - and gambling is still banned by the city charter, which is why the nearest casinos sit just outside the city limits. Today it is a quiet, tidy town of shaded parks, low 1930s buildings, cafes, antique shops and public art, with the Boulder Dam Hotel and its dam museum at the centre and desert bighorn sheep grazing on a city park lawn. The highway now bypasses downtown, so you must choose to stop. It is a good breakfast, lunch or half-day stop between Las Vegas and Hoover Dam, not a destination for a long stay.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the historic district's streets and parks are open all the time; cafes and diners open from early morning, around 6 or 7 am, and many close by mid-afternoon; shops and galleries open roughly 10 am to 5 pm, with many closed or short-houred early in the week; the museum in the Boulder Dam Hotel keeps daytime hours, roughly 10 am to 5 pm, with some closed days; the railroad museum's trains usually run on weekends only. The traps are skipping the Boulder City exit and never seeing the town, arriving on a Monday or Tuesday to shuttered shops, walking the Railroad Trail in the midday heat, expecting a weekday train, and hunting for sheep at noon in winter. Confirm current times before relying on them.
