Boyne Mountain Resort

Ski Resort · Boyne Falls, Michigan

Boyne Mountain is a ski and golf resort at Boyne Falls in northern Lower Michigan, started in the late 1940s by Everett Kircher, a restless entrepreneur who is remembered for bringing chairlifts and snowmaking to Midwest skiing. The hill has about 500 feet of vertical and about 60 runs, which is small by western standards but large for Michigan, and lake-effect snow plus machine-made snow keep a season going from roughly December into March. Summer brings golf, hiking and biking, and the Avalanche Bay indoor waterpark gives non-skiers and small children a full day under a roof in any month. It suits families and mixed groups far better than expert skiers chasing steep terrain. Prices for lift tickets and lodging vary widely by date, so confirm current rates and book ahead for holiday weeks. Petoskey and Gaylord are about 30 to 60 minutes away, and Detroit is about 4.5 hours by car. Treat it as a weekend resort, not a day stop.

The resort operates year-round, but each part keeps its own calendar. The ski season runs roughly December to March, depending on snowfall and temperature, with lifts usually turning from morning to late afternoon and some night skiing on selected evenings - confirm hours for your date. Golf, hiking and mountain biking run in the warm months, commonly May to October. The Avalanche Bay waterpark is indoors and normally open daily in peak periods but may close for maintenance or run shortened hours midweek in quiet seasons. Lodge front desks, restaurants and the spa keep their own hours, so check the resort schedule before you travel.
