Boysen State Park
State Park · Shoshoni, Wyoming
A reservoir park at the southern mouth of Wind River Canyon, with campgrounds scattered along a long, windswept shoreline and a reputation for walleye fishing. Its northern end below Boysen Dam is where US 20 enters the canyon through tunnels, making it the natural stop before or after the canyon drive. Boysen Dam was finished by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1952 and named after Asmus Boysen, who built an earlier dam near the site. The park stretches around a large reservoir in open high desert near Shoshoni, with campgrounds on its shores and more in the canyon mouth below the dam. North of the dam the Wind River runs through the Wind River Indian Reservation, so fishing in the canyon needs a tribal permit as well as the usual rules. Walleye, perch and trout draw anglers all year, including through the ice in winter.
