Brandywine Creek State Park

Delaware State Park On The Brandywine Creek North Of Wilmington, Opened In The 1960s On A Former Du Pont Family Dairy Farm And Home To The State'S First Two Dedicated Nature Preserves · Wilmington, Delaware

Brandywine Creek State Park covers a stretch of rolling meadow, woodland and creek valley a few miles north of downtown Wilmington, in the chateau country where the du Pont family built its estates. Much of the land was once a du Pont dairy farm, and the long gray fieldstone walls that still run across the hilltop meadows date from that farm era. The state opened it as a park in the 1960s, and two pieces of it became Delaware's first nature preserves: Tulip Tree Woods, a grove of tall, straight tulip poplars on a slope above the creek, and the Freshwater Marsh along the water. The Brandywine itself runs through the middle, wide and shallow over rocks, and draws people in summer to float it on tubes or paddle it when the level is right, and in spring to fish for stocked trout. In autumn volunteers count migrating hawks from the hill by the nature center. It is a local park more than a destination: quiet meadows, a disc golf course, a dozen or so miles of trail and a per-vehicle fee in season, a short drive from Winterthur, Hagley and Mt. Cuba.

The park is open every day of the year, generally from about 8 AM to sunset, and the parking areas are meant to be empty by dusk; confirm current hours, because they can shift with the season. A per-vehicle entry fee is normally charged at the main entrance during the fee season, roughly March through November, and it is higher for cars with out-of-state plates; outside that season entry has usually been free, and people arriving on foot or by bicycle have generally not paid - confirm the season and amounts. The Brandywine Creek Nature Center keeps its own shorter hours, usually centered on weekends and program days, and it can be shut on weekdays even when the trails are busy. Tubing and paddling on the creek are not a service the park runs on a schedule: they depend on the water level, and after heavy rain the creek can be closed to use or simply unsafe. The Thompson's Bridge and other side parking areas fill early on summer weekends, and rangers may turn cars away once lots are full. Trout season opens on a set spring date with its own rules. Confirm all of this before a long drive.
