Brannan Island State Recreation Area

State Park · Rio Vista, California

Brannan Island State Recreation Area sits in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, reached from Highway 160 near the small river towns of Rio Vista and Isleton. It lies on the Sacramento River in a flat maze of sloughs, levees and tule marsh, and it is a California State Parks unit built around water: a campground, a swim beach, boat launching, fishing and some of the Delta's best afternoon wind for windsurfing. It is a place for campers, anglers and boaters more than for sightseers, and a day here is slow and low-key. Know the water before you go in: the river has real current, ships pass in the channel, and swimming is only sensible at the marked beach area. Summers are hot and dry, winter brings tule fog, and mosquitoes are part of the deal. Facilities, fees and seasons change - confirm with State Parks before you travel, and bring supplies, since the towns are small and close early. Weekends in summer are busy.

California State Parks day-use areas like this one have usually been open from around sunrise to sunset, with campers able to stay through the night inside the campground - confirm the current gate times and whether an entrance kiosk is staffed. Some services, such as the swim beach, a visitor or ranger presence and any interpretive programs, run seasonally and mostly in summer, so a spring or winter visit may find them closed. Heavy tule fog on winter mornings can delay a day for boaters, and high water, flooding or levee work can close the launch or a section of the park at short notice. Check the official State Parks page for the current hours and closures the morning you leave.
