Bread and Puppet Theater

Theater · Glover, Vermont

A political puppet theatre founded on New York's Lower East Side in 1963 and resident on a farm at Glover in the Northeast Kingdom since 1974, which is one of the best known companies of its kind anywhere and tours internationally from a Vermont hayfield. Its Paper Mache Cathedral, a converted dairy barn, holds four floors of puppets - some of them twenty feet tall, most of them made for protests and processions over sixty years - and is described as among the largest collections of its kind in the world. It is free. In summer it stages outdoor shows in the meadow and hands out sourdough rye bread with garlic aioli afterwards, which is where the name comes from.

753 Heights Road, Glover, Vermont, 05839, United States

⚠ FREE - the Paper Mache Cathedral museum takes no admission and the summer shows are free or by donation, which the company has maintained since 1963. Free parking on a field. ⚠ SEASONAL IN PRACTICE: the museum is open through the warmer months, roughly late spring to autumn, and the OUTDOOR SHOWS RUN IN SUMMER, roughly June to late August, with Sundays the main performance days. The barn is unheated and the meadow is outdoors - out of season there is effectively nothing to see, so check the published schedule before driving into the Northeast Kingdom. ⚠ THERE IS NO FIXED SEATING ANYWHERE - bring a blanket or a folding chair. SOURDOUGH RYE BREAD WITH GARLIC AIOLI is served free after shows. There is no cafe or restaurant; bring food and water, because Glover is a village of about a thousand people and services are thin. The museum barn has four floors, narrow steep stairs and no lift.
