UNESCO World Heritage Site: Town Hall And Roland On The Marketplace Of Bremen (2004); A Hanseatic City State With The Roland Statue Of 1404, The Schnoor Quarter, Boettcherstrasse And The Town Musicians · Bremen, Bremen

Bremen is a city state of about 570,000 people on the lower Weser, and its UNESCO listing of 2004 covers two things on one square: the town hall and the Roland statue. Roland has stood there since 1404, sword raised, facing the cathedral - a deliberate statement that the city answered to the emperor and not to the archbishop across the way. Around him the Marktplatz holds the Weser Renaissance town hall front, the merchants' guild house, and a modern parliament that argues with both. The Town Musicians of the Grimm tale stand against the town hall's west wall, and visitors queue to rub the donkey's front legs. Behind the square the Schnoor is the oldest surviving lane quarter, now full of small shops, and Boettcherstrasse is something stranger: a short expressionist brick street commissioned by a coffee merchant in the 1920s, with a gilded relief and a carillon of porcelain bells. The cathedral has the Bleikeller mummies in its cellar and the Ratskeller below the town hall pours German wine only. Bremen is half a day to a day, often paired with Hamburg an hour away.

The Marktplatz, Roland, the Town Musicians, the Schnoor lanes and Boettcherstrasse are open streets, free and walkable at any hour. The town hall interior is seen on guided tours at set times, usually a couple of afternoons a day and not when the senate is sitting - confirm. The cathedral opens daily with shorter Sunday hours around services, and the Bleikeller cellar and the tower keep a shorter season, often closing in winter - confirm before planning around either. City museums generally close on Monday, as most German museums do. The Boettcherstrasse carillon turns its bells a few times a day in the warmer months only. The Ratskeller serves lunch and dinner and shuts between. Schnoor shops keep ordinary retail hours and close on Sunday.
