Bridal Veil Falls

Waterfall · Provo, Utah

A double cataract of 607 feet falling down the north wall of Provo Canyon beside US Route 189, twenty minutes from Provo and reachable from a car park and a paved path. An aerial tramway ran to a restaurant at the top from 1961 until an avalanche destroyed the machinery and the lodge in early 1996; neither was rebuilt, an arson fire damaged what was left in July 2008 and the cable came down that August. Another avalanche in early 2023 rearranged the ground again. It is beautiful, it is easy to reach, and it kills about one person a year.

Provo Canyon, US Route 189, Provo, Utah, United States

FREE, with free parking, open year round beside US Route 189 in Provo Canyon. ⚠ THIS SITE RECORDS APPROXIMATELY ONE DEATH ANNUALLY, WITH TWO IN OCTOBER 2016 — the documented mechanism is that in autumn and winter rapid temperature change lays thin ice over rock that looks merely wet, and the accidents happen to people who leave the made path and scramble toward the base. STAY ON THE PAVED PATH. ⚠ IT IS AN ACTIVE AVALANCHE PATH: a slide destroyed the aerial tramway and the Eagle's Nest Lodge in early 1996, and another in early 2023 altered the falls and the vegetation again. THE TRAMWAY NO LONGER EXISTS — arson damaged the remains in July 2008 and the cable was ordered removed that August — but visitors still arrive expecting to ride it. The falls are fed by snowmelt and are heaviest in late spring. The paved Provo River Parkway, on the bed of the old Heber Creeper railway, runs past the falls.
