Bridges of Madison County
Historic Bridge · Winterset, Iowa
Six covered bridges scattered across the farmland around Winterset, south-west of Des Moines, and the reason a county of fifteen thousand people is known worldwide. Robert James Waller's 1992 novel and the 1995 Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep film made Roseman Bridge in particular famous far outside Iowa. They are free, they are open all year, each has a small free parking area, and only one of the six can still be driven across.
Roseman Bridge, Winterset, Iowa, United States
FREE, all six bridges, open all year, with a small free parking area at each. ⚠ ONLY CEDAR BRIDGE CAN STILL BE DRIVEN ACROSS — Roseman, Cutler-Donahoe, Hogback, Holliwell and Imes are open to walkers and cyclists only, which undoes a planned driving tour. ⚠ THIS ROW IS PINNED AT ROSEMAN BRIDGE, the one from the novel and film; the six are scattered across Madison County and seeing them all is a half-day drive. START AT THE WINTERSET VISITOR CENTRE FOR A MAP — the bridges are on unsignposted gravel roads and are not intuitive to link up. ⚠ SEVERAL APPROACH ROADS ARE UNPAVED and become poor after heavy rain or in a spring thaw. The car parks are tiny and fill during the October Covered Bridge Festival, with no overflow. ⚠ NO POSTCODE IS RECORDED: OpenStreetMap returns no result for the bridge, so the field is left empty rather than estimated from the town.
