Brighton Beach
Beach Town · Brooklyn, New York
The oceanfront neighbourhood east of Coney Island that became the largest Russian-speaking community in the United States after Soviet Jewish emigration in the 1970s and again after 1991 — ⚠ AND WHOSE POPULATION IS NOW SUBSTANTIALLY UKRAINIAN, CENTRAL ASIAN AND GEORGIAN AS WELL. It is a working immigrant neighbourhood with a boardwalk, and the food is the best reason in southern Brooklyn to get on a train.
Brighton Beach Avenue at Coney Island Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11235, United States
An open neighbourhood — free, no gate, no hours. The boardwalk and the beach are free and open year round; ⚠ SWIMMING IS PERMITTED ONLY WHEN LIFEGUARDS ARE ON DUTY, roughly late May to early September during posted hours. Food shops, bakeries and restaurants along Brighton Beach Avenue keep their own hours and ⚠ MANY ARE CASH-ONLY OR PREFER CASH. The B and Q lines stop directly on the avenue. ⚠ It is a working immigrant neighbourhood — Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Uzbek and more — rather than a themed district.
