One Of The Best Kept Outport Villages Near St. John'S, With Summer Visitors And A Small Number Of Galleries And Bed And Breakfasts · Brigus, Newfoundland and Labrador
Brigus is a small harbour village on the Conception Bay shore of the Avalon Peninsula, roughly an hour's drive from St. John's, and one of the best-preserved fishing and sealing outports in Newfoundland. Steep lanes lead between white clapboard houses, stone walls and gardens down to a sheltered cove, and the whole village has the look of a place that has changed little in a century. It is best known as the home of Captain Bob Bartlett, the Arctic navigator who captained Peary's ship on his northern voyages, and his family house, Hawthorne Cottage, is a National Historic Site. A hand-cut tunnel near the harbour, dug through rock in the 1860s to reach a wharf, is another landmark. Brigus also grew rich on the seal fishery and the Labrador cod trade, which paid for the fine houses along the lanes. Galleries, small inns and cafes serve summer visitors, and everything lies within an easy stroll of the harbour.

The village streets, the harbour, the tunnel path and the lanes are open at any hour, and the best part of the visit is simply walking them. Hawthorne Cottage and the small museum are seasonal, commonly open from about June to early September with daily hours that run from mid-morning to late afternoon, and may close on some weekdays or in shoulder months (confirm). Galleries, craft shops, cafes and inns follow summer hours and many close from October to May. The Brigus Blueberry Festival in late summer brings extra events and crowds, so confirm dates, and expect limited services in winter.
