Brimley State Park
Michigan State Park · Brimley, Michigan
Brimley State Park sits on the shore of Whitefish Bay, the sheltered southeast corner of Lake Superior, in the eastern Upper Peninsula about 15 to 20 miles from Sault Ste. Marie. It is a developed park built around a sandy beach and a large drive-in campground, and it is one of the easier places on Lake Superior to actually get in the water, because the bay is shallow and warms more than the open lake. Even so, Superior is cold: a swim in June is a short, bracing one. Freighters bound to and from the Soo Locks pass in the distance, and the Ontario shore is visible across the bay. The park suits families, RV campers and anyone using it as a quiet base for the Soo Locks, Tahquamenon and Whitefish Point rather than a hotel in town. It is not a wilderness park: expect campground traffic, black flies and mosquitoes in early summer, and gales in autumn. A Michigan Recreation Passport is needed for entry. Confirm facilities and fees.

Michigan state parks are generally open daily, year-round, from about 8 AM to 10 PM for day use, and campers can come and go on their reservation. Brimley's full-service camping season is usually late spring to early autumn, with some winter use possible depending on the park, so confirm which loops, restrooms and showers are open on your dates with the Michigan DNR. Day visitors need a Recreation Passport on the vehicle. Snow in this part of the Upper Peninsula can close or limit access from late fall to spring, and the beach has no lifeguard, so swim at your own risk. Check current conditions before a long drive, because the nearest large town is the Sault, a short but real distance away.
