Brockway Mountain Drive
Scenic Highway · Copper Harbor, Michigan
Brockway Mountain Drive is a paved scenic road of about 9 miles that climbs a ridge above Copper Harbor on the Keweenaw Peninsula, rising to about 1,300 feet above sea level and around 700 feet over Lake Superior. It is a commonly stated claim that it is the highest paved road between the Rockies and the Alleghenies. From turnouts and the summit you look over Lake Superior, Copper Harbor and unbroken northern forest. It is a well-known hawk-watching spot in spring and autumn, and fall colour usually peaks from late September to early October. The road is narrow with curves and drop-offs, wildlife on the pavement and weak cell service, and it is closed to cars in snow season (confirm dates). It is free, short and best on a clear day, because fog hides the view. Plan an hour or two, with Fort Wilkins Historic State Park and Eagle Harbor nearby. Bring fuel, layers and patience for weather that can turn quickly.

The drive is a seasonal public road with no gate hours in the usual sense, open to cars once the snow has cleared, commonly from late spring into autumn. It is closed to cars in snow season, often from around late autumn until the spring thaw, and the dates change with the weather, so confirm with local Keweenaw tourism or road authorities before driving far to reach it. In winter the road may still be used by snowmobiles or skiers in some conditions, but ask locally. Daylight is the best time for views; night driving is not advised because of curves, wildlife and no lighting. Cell service is weak, so check the weather before you go up.
