Broken Hill

An Outback Mining City Built On One Of The Richest Silver, Lead And Zinc Deposits Ever Found, Entirely Heritage Listed, With A Sculpture Park On The Surrounding Hills, An Artist Colony That Grew Up Around The Harsh Desert Light, And A Museum Trading On Films Shot In The Country Nearby · Broken Hill, New South Wales

Broken Hill is a mining city in the far west of New South Wales, built directly on top of one of the richest silver, lead and zinc ore bodies ever found, discovered as a line of broken ironstone outcrop in 1883 that gave the whole place its name. The entire city is heritage-listed, from the wide colonial-era main street and tin-roofed miners' cottages to the Line of Lode memorial standing on the old slag heap above town. Decades of mining money built grand civic buildings on a genuinely remote outback skyline, and the same isolation and harsh desert light that shaped the mines also drew a serious artist colony, most famously the Brushmen of the Bush, whose work fills small private galleries around town. A sculpture park of monumental works sits on a red hill outside the city watching the sunset, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air both trace part of their story to Broken Hill's isolation. Mad Max 2 and several other films used the surrounding desert as a backdrop, and a small museum trades happily on that history alongside the mining story itself.

Underground mine tours and most galleries run daily but on their own set departure times and seasonal hours, typically mid-morning to mid-afternoon, so confirm the current timetable with the visitor information centre before planning a day around one. The Living Desert sculpture park gate closes to new arrivals shortly after sunset and has no night lighting. School of the Air visitor sessions run only on school days during term time and are closed entirely on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Several small private galleries and mine tour operators close over the Christmas and New Year period - confirm current dates before a visit in that window.
