Brookfield Zoo Chicago

Zoo · Brookfield, Illinois

A two-hundred-and-sixteen-acre zoo in the western suburbs that opened in 1934 and changed how American zoos were built — it was the first major one in the country to abandon cages for moated, barless enclosures, so animals appeared to stand in open landscape. It was renamed Brookfield Zoo Chicago in 2024, and a sixty-six-million-dollar Tropical Forests habitat opened in 2025.
