Brookgreen Gardens
National Historic Landmark · Murrells Inlet, South Carolina
Four former rice plantations at Murrells Inlet that Archer Huntington and his wife Anna Hyatt Huntington bought in 1930 as a winter retreat, and turned instead into the first public sculpture garden in the United States. Anna was one of the more successful American sculptors of her generation and the collection she started now holds the largest gathering of American figurative sculpture anywhere — well over two thousand works — set in gardens under live oaks that were already two centuries old when she arrived.
