Brooklyn Bridge
Iconic Bridge · New York, New York
Opened in 1883 after fourteen years and at least twenty deaths, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first to use steel cable. John Roebling died of tetanus before construction began, his son Washington was crippled by decompression sickness in the caissons, and his wife Emily ran the project from their Brooklyn Heights window for eleven years — which is why her name is on the plaque at the tower.
