Brooklyn Heights

Heritage District · Brooklyn, New York

A bluff of Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate houses above the East River, ⚠ DESIGNATED IN 1965 AS NEW YORK CITY'S FIRST HISTORIC DISTRICT — the test case for the landmarks law passed that year after the destruction of Penn Station. It holds the PROMENADE, a third of a mile of cantilevered walkway with the Manhattan skyline in front of it, built on top of the expressway that would otherwise have destroyed the neighbourhood.

Montague Street at Hicks Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201, United States

An open residential neighbourhood — free, no gate, no hours. ⚠ THE BROOKLYN HEIGHTS PROMENADE IS FREE AND OPEN AT ALL TIMES and is one of the best skyline views in New York City. Plymouth Church is free during its opening hours. Shops and restaurants on Montague and Henry Streets keep ordinary hours. ⚠ THE PROMENADE IS BUILT ON THE ROOF OF THE BROOKLYN-QUEENS EXPRESSWAY, which is structurally failing and subject to a long-running and unresolved reconstruction argument — check for current works before a special trip. ⚠ It is a residential neighbourhood and people live in these houses.
