Brooklyn Navy Yard
Industrial Heritage · Brooklyn, New York
Three hundred acres on the East River that built warships for the United States Navy from 1801 to 1966 — the USS Monitor's machinery, the USS Arizona, the USS Missouri on which Japan surrendered — and employed SEVENTY THOUSAND PEOPLE at its wartime peak. It closed in 1966, decayed for decades, and is now a working industrial park of some 550 businesses. ⚠ IT IS A PRIVATE CAMPUS AND ACCESS IS BY TOUR.
63 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11205, United States
⚠ A PRIVATE WORKING INDUSTRIAL CAMPUS — you cannot walk in and wander. ⚠⚠ BLDG 92, the visitor and exhibition centre, IS BEING REPORTED AS LISTED-OPEN-BUT-ACTUALLY-CLOSED: a visitor account describes being turned away on a published open day with staff unable to say when it would open, and published hours conflict between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. ⚠ DO NOT PLAN A VISIT AROUND IT. ⚠ BOOK A GUIDED TOUR INSTEAD — run by an independent operator from BLDG 92, in advance, on a published calendar, and genuinely excellent. ⚠ THE NAVAL CEMETERY LANDSCAPE on the Yard's edge is FREE and separately accessible. ⚠ VERIFY BLDG 92'S STATUS BEFORE PUBLISHING THIS ROW.
