Bruce Museum
Natural History · Greenwich, Connecticut
A museum that does art and natural science in the same building and refuses to choose, in the wealthiest town in Connecticut, and since a very large expansion completed in 2023 it has the galleries to carry it. The art side runs strong changing exhibitions rather than a fixed hang, and punches well above a town museum - it borrows seriously and it shows. The science side has a permanent Connecticut natural history gallery built around a walk-through diorama of the local woodland and coast, a mineral collection that is genuinely good, and dinosaur and fossil material that holds children for longer than the art does. It sits above Bruce Park with Long Island Sound below, four minutes walk from Greenwich station, which makes it one of the easiest places in this whole set to reach from New York without a car. Take the train, walk four minutes, and you are in a museum that most people in Manhattan have never heard of and that has better minerals than it has any business owning.
