Bruneau Dunes State Park

Sand Dunes · Mountain Home, Idaho

Four thousand eight hundred acres of sand, sage and small lakes fifteen miles south of Mountain Home, holding North America's tallest single-structured sand dune at about 470 feet. The dunes are unusual in more than height: they formed near the centre of a basin rather than at its edge, which is why they have stayed roughly in place for more than twelve thousand years instead of marching downwind. The park also runs a public observatory, which makes it the one place in Idaho where you can climb a dune at sunset and look through a telescope after dark.
