Bueng Boraphet
Thailand'S Largest Freshwater Swamp; Lotus Fields And Waterbirds; Nakhon Sawan Is Where The Ping And Nan Rivers Join To Form The Chao Phraya · Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Sawan
Bueng Boraphet is the largest freshwater swamp and lake in Thailand, a shallow expanse of open water, reed beds, floating vegetation and lotus fields just east of the city of Nakhon Sawan in the lower north of the central plain. It is a protected wetland and non-hunting area, important for fisheries and for birds, and in the cool season, roughly November to March, it fills with waterbirds and migrant ducks, herons, egrets, jacanas and swamphens. Boats take visitors out through channels among the lotus and water lilies, best early in the morning. On the shore, a fisheries centre area has long been home to a freshwater aquarium; check what is open. The lake is also the only known home of the white-eyed river martin, a swallow discovered here in 1968 and not reliably seen since about 1980; it may be extinct. Nearby Nakhon Sawan sits at Paknam Pho, where the Ping and Nan rivers join to form the Chao Phraya, and it is famous for its Chinese New Year dragon parade and its mooncakes.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the lake shore and boat piers are open from dawn, with boatmen usually available from early morning to late afternoon; the non-hunting area headquarters keeps daytime hours of roughly 8 am to 4.30 pm; the freshwater aquarium and fisheries exhibits usually open around 9 am to 4 or 5 pm and may close one day a week, often Monday, and on some holidays. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at midday when the lotus have closed and the birds are resting, coming in June for migrants that left in March, driving out to a closed aquarium, arriving for Chinese New Year without a hotel room, and expecting to see the white-eyed river martin. Confirm current times before relying on them.
