Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

Catacombs · Houston, Texas

Houston's first underground drinking-water reservoir, built in 1926, decommissioned after a leak and then simply forgotten until 2010 — an acre and a quarter of black water under a concrete roof held up by 221 columns twenty-five feet tall. It reflects like a mirror, it holds a seventeen-second echo, and the city now runs guided tours and light installations in it.
