Buffalo Bill Dam and Visitor Center
Bureau Of Reclamation Dam; National Register Of Historic Places · Cody, Wyoming
A concrete arch dam in the narrow Shoshone Canyon six miles west of Cody, completed in 1910 as one of the first concrete arch dams in the United States and billed as the tallest dam in the world at the time. Originally called the Shoshone Dam, it was renamed for Buffalo Bill Cody, who promoted irrigating the valley. A free visitor centre on the dam has exhibits and a walkway with views straight down into the gorge, and the highway tunnels through Rattlesnake Mountain beside it. The dam was first called the Shoshone Dam and was renamed after Buffalo Bill in 1946. It was raised by 25 feet in 1993. The visitor centre sits at the dam, with exhibits and a walkway across the dam's crest looking down into Shoshone Canyon.
